The floor in my school has hard industrial tile. While it is durable, it is not a comfortable place to gather and learn together! In a typical day in first grade, we spend a lot of time meeting together on the carpet. I often will sit on the floor with my students throughout the day as we are practicing a new math concept or discussing books together. Gathering on the carpet is a perfect place for sharing, learning, singing, and building our classroom community! A lot of our learning time is spent on the floor, but it can be painful due to the poor condition of our carpet! Unfortunately, our current carpet is about twenty years old. It is threadbare and stained from the thousands of feet that have walked over it during the past two decades. The carpet has been well-used and served it's purpose, but it needs to be replaced! I chose the carpet on Lakeshore because it is a large carpet that will allow my students to have their own, defined personal space! It is a beautiful carpet! Having a new carpet will allow students to be able to focus on learning because their legs will not be sore from lack of padding. My students also enjoy reading and writing on the carpet. By having an alternative place for them to work, it allows them the space needed for them to be successful learners!
