Because of the pandemic, school closures, and distance learning, we are seeing huge gaps in learning in our students. I am going to begin tutoring 4th and 5th grade students after school to help them with the learning that they missed due to these unfortunate circumstances. These 4th and 5th graders have not had a normal school year since they were 1st and 2nd graders and they need additional practice to close their academic gaps to be prepared for middle school. I want to make the tutoring a fun and safe environment, since they are still living in chaos and worry because of the pandemic. I will be focusing on basic operations and place value in math. I will also be working on ELA skills such as phonics skills to increase decoding strategies and skill deficits such as figurative language, summarizing texts, interpreting information in non-fiction texts. I need to help close the gaps that these students have unfortunately accrued.
