Flexible seating provides numerous benefits to all students. Students are given a chance to feel empowered by their choices in controlling aspects of their environment. It provides options for different sensory inputs, which may be vital in providing outlets for certain behaviors that could impede learning. Students also receive additional oxygen to their brain when given access to things like stationary bike pedals and stability ball chairs. The more we can incorporate movement into our learning, the less the need for additional brain breaks is. If we can get kids moving during our lessons, we will actually have more time for learning then if we have to stop and take complete breaks from learning. Flexible seating also encourages an atmosphere that motivates learning, more than the standard desk and chair. Students feel like peddling a bike, or wobbling on a ball are more "fun", therefore, they are more likely to buy-in to your lessons. My students need balance chairs and stationary bike pedals as an outlet for their energy and to release vital oxygen to their brain for successful learning. They would benefit physically, mentally, and emotionally from having flexible seating options in our classroom.
