Flexible seating allows students a choice and some control over their environment. Research has shown that giving students a choice about their physical classroom space teaches them higher order thinking skills. Also, children need to move. Flexible seating such as the wobble cushions, wobble chairs, and exercise balls, allows them to wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand, which increases oxygen flow to the brain, and keeps their young minds more alert and focused. Physical activity is linked to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior. It stands to reason that a uncomfortable student is a distracted, and unproductive student. Flexible seating encourages students to find their best spot to stay calm, focused, and productive, which is beneficial for students in special education. Many of these seating options stimulate students sense of touch as well. This type of stimulation can help children focus and process information. It is especially helpful for students with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Lastly, flexible seating helps to make learning fun. Students who have learning disabilities often have difficulty making academic progress, and get made fun of by other students for having to attend an RSP classroom. Providing a fun environment where students can move, bounce, and wobble while not realizing they are more engaged, focused, comfortable, and productive is my goal. Providing what each individual student needs to make progress in school.
