As we are setting up classrooms for the new year, I peruse the hallways for new ideas for a theme. Starting from the middle school and making my way down towards elementary. Middle school teachers seem to have it together with their class arrangements, but i still don't feel inspired. I then get to the elementary end and it looks like Pinterest and IKEA made a super store. So much life and creativity filled the rooms but the biggest takeaway was the flexible seating.
With your aid you are helping me usher in those feelings of warmth and thoughtfulness back into the classroom for these middle school students as they once experienced in their younger days. Along with the curriculum I'm a rigorous teacher, it would be nice to have a reward for putting up with me on a daily basis!
They will be used as incentives for those groups who have a consistent flow of home/classroom learning and collaboration. I want my students to always feel welcomed and at ease in class, especially since it's being Pre-Algebra! The Flexible seats will be the area where I pull students in for small group instruction, or they have the option to sit on the rug!
I went up and asked my team why we don't have that option, and they unanimously replied, "They'd ruin it!" I feel like middle and secondary students get short changed in the classroom. The older students get, the less creativity teachers should put forth to creating atmosphere in the classroom?? Doesn't make sense. It's time for a change.
