My students suffer from situations of poverty and consequently do not have equal access to basic items. While they do receive free and reduced priced breakfast and lunch, the provided food is often insufficient in meeting the needs of these growing kiddos. Research is clear that kids learn best when they are adequately fed.
Several students have already inquired about needing a snack during the day and classes just began last week. I have struggled in my new position as the Academic Coordinator at FLC locating resources to fulfill this unmet student need. Two of my coworkers suggested I create an account here to outreach community members that might offer some assistance so here I am :)
I am requesting a variety of items including gluten free and non GMO breakfast bars, organic snacks, and food that students can take home for meals. I am also asking for some personal hygiene items (toothbrushes and loofah's) as these things are commonly not replaced as often as necessary by my students due to economic disadvantage.
