My students attend our school for the vocational programs that they offer. Their vocational classes take place in the auto, marine or motor cycle shop, culinary kitchen, cosmetology salon, medical or vet labs, recording arts studio and graphic arts/IT labs. They enjoy the exciting environments that these programs offer. Then they attend my academic class in a traditional classroom. I try to make my classroom environment inviting and comfortable and I am fortunate enough to be able to do hands-on lab activities to keep their interest. However, when we must complete seat work, I believe flexible seating will help my students be more engaged, especially since many of them are kinesthetic learners. The use of stability balls in the classroom has also been researched. In 2007, the Mayo Clinic conducted a study on children using stability balls and found that the students were more attentive when they were able to move around while sitting. I know these stability balls will help my high energy students keep focused during their academic time with me.
