How many times have you read a book or an article and when you got to the end you couldn't remember what you read? Maybe you were thinking about the weekend or what you would have for dinner, but you certainly weren't engaged in what you were reading. Studies have shown that students who have more engaged reading time are far more likely to learn more words, comprehend more complex texts, and are more likely to graduate high school. The kicker in all of this is that the time on reading only correlates to these benefits if the student is engaged in the reading. If they read for an entire hour but don't understand what they read then it counts as zero minutes of engaged reading! That means fewer words learned, less comprehension, and students who are less likely to graduate high school. My students are far more engaged in reading when it is of high interest and about stories they can relate to. Curriculum standards are often full of suggested books that are too often not engaging to 21st century learners. My students get excited when they read about people their own age and about the struggles humans face and have faced throughout history. When I hear them discussing texts they understood and enjoyed they leave my class feeling successful and more motivated. I have spent months finding activities and games that will engage students with whatever text they choose. I have selected a class library of modern books full of stories that my students will eat up. My goal is to increase their engaged reading time so more students can share in the benefits of better reading skills. As a result they will have a deeper understanding of their world and their role in it.
