Think about the start of your day and count how many computers you use. I will start with my morning. My alarm is on my cell phone (1), I watch the news on television (2), I use the dryer or iron to unwrinkle my clothes (3), I drink a cup of coffee (4), I drive my vehicle to work (5), I have to pass at least 1 red light (6), etc. We have so many encounters with computers (electronics) each day that we sometimes disregard the experiences because we can't see the computer or technology behind the mechanism. My students are aware that our world becomes more technological each day. Yet, they must share or even go without calculators during class. Of course, 90% of them have cell phones (school rules forbid them to use), but their phones don't have the technological capability that is specific to the graphing calculators they need. There is a rush to the calculator shelf each period and someone always leaves knowing that their work will be all the more difficult without this technology. Now, if your day starts anything like mine, imagine if any of those luxuries afforded to us by computers/technology was suddenly unavailable. Now, imagine that the technology is available, but there's just not enough for you. If that affects you in any way, think of the affect on my students.
