Let's face it, we live in the 21st century where children are using technology earlier than ever. Having an iPad to use in speech therapy could benefit so many of my students. The iPad is not a substitute for teaching, but is another tool I can use to facilitate communication. I won't use it it everyday, but having the option will open windows of opportunity that I otherwise wouldn't have. Many of my students with autism respond well to technology. There are apps that teach language skills, speech sounds, and even social skills which might "get through" to these kids more than the traditional methods. Also, the iPad can be used as a reward for working hard in "speech class," which will help motivate almost all of my students. I see my students in groups of 1 to 3 and they each of their own goals. If there is a child that needs extra attention or help that day, I can give the iPad to the other child to use for a few minutes. This will keep all the students engaged and learning. I selected an iPad because there are many apps that are only compatible with Apple products. If I could, I would get an iPad for all my students! But since there is only one of me, I only need one iPad.
