This year I have chosen a Broadway theme based off Dear Evan Hansen, Rent, Hamilton, and Wicked for my classroom. Through my theme, I hope to try and encourage and remind my students how amazing they are by reminding them every day that they do not have to accept limits, together we are unlimited, there are 526,500 minutes to plan each of their journey’s this year, there are a million things they have not done yet, they are original, and they should never ever doubt that it matters that they are here. As a part of this theme, I am going to have a Broadway Themed Question each week for each subject that allows students to not just do math, but also get to know more about the musicals I have selected (for example, there will be a question that shows how sampling in statistics helped prove how many of the Federalist Papers were written by Alexander Hamilton). By learning about these protagonists, I hope they will learn more about themselves and embrace their own unique qualities. Questions will be posted on the wall each week, and students will earn points for answering the questions. I would like to have prizes for the end of each semester that are themed with the musicals I have in my room this year due to the positive messages they promote. I hope that by connecting my subject matter of mathematics to the music and messages these Broadway musicals bring, will not just help my students learn mathematics, but help them learn to take pride in who they are as individuals, too.
