My 5th grade students love to read but don't have access to any class sets of books to read together. Our school's reading program doesn't have any novels for the students to read and pick apart to learn how to read and write. Novel studies is what these students will learn/do in middle and high school and I want to prepare them for their educational future but I don't have the funds to do so. Please help these kids get prepared for middle school by learning how to read a fantastic, life-lesson novel together. The book "Wonder" by R.J. Palacio teaches students about empathy and sympathy, as well as is a great age-appropriate book for 5th grade students. The novel itself hits many standards and I can work in many different writing and reading strategies using it. Many of the students want to read "Wonder" but I only have one personal copy and can't teach them using the book by projecting it up on the wall and having them gather around. I want to make these students' 5th grade year a memorable one and having fantastic novels, such as "Wonder", would definitely get the students excited as well as prepare them for the future.
