All of my experiences leading up to this year as a first-year teacher has lead me to understand students must have their basic needs met to be able to focus on learning. Both in the kindergarten class I volunteered with and in the fifth-grade class I student taught in, snacks made it possible for the students to focus. Both of those classes had last lunch and this year my students have the last lunch. The big gap of time between breakfast and lunch can make their work time feel like an eternity if they are hungry. Healthy snacks such as fruit snacks, Goldfish, popcorn, and pretzels will help my students to be able to do the hard work to grow as scholars.
