In my classroom we use tables rather than desks. This arrangement allows for flexible seating and is perfect for the discussion and collaboration that we do throughout our day. Unfortunately, the lack of desks presents a storage issue. Students share basic supplies with their tables, but they need a place to keep their notebooks, folders, and books. Each student will have his/her own mailbox and drawer to keep these necessities neat and organized. Managing their own materials is a valuable opportunity for my third graders to develop organizational skills that they will use inside and outside of the classroom. Not only will the mailboxes and carts help to keep our classroom organized, but having fewer materials at their seats will also help students remain focused (rather than fidgeting with something in their desks). This storage system will play an important role in helping our class learn!
