We spend our year learning the ways we are stewards - of the Earth, plants, animals, and each other. Our focus always comes back to the 4 R's of conservation: reduce, reuse, recycle and, most importantly, restore. This year I want to up the stakes with Trout in the Classroom. The startup cost is prohibitive for our small school district, but the benefits to my students and our larger community would be incredible. The trout eggs and fry require a large aquarium, a chiller to keep the water at the proper temperature, a 700 gallon per hour water pump, water test kit, and supplies to aid in maintaining the health of the fry until they are large enough to be released. Our annual field trip is to the Hudson River, where students make real world connections to the experiments and lessons we focus on in the classroom. TIC will enable students to nurture and study trout as they transform from eggs to fry, and then release them back into the local watershed. This is experiential learning at its best!
