I am trying to provide my students with more relevant and engaging texts that will encourage activism and a social conscience. I want to read The Hate U Give with my students to get them excited about reading and to help them think about real-life issues teens today face. These students will use the text to open their eyes about the type of events and struggles that people their age deal with, and we'll use the text as a springboard to facilitate classroom discussions about what we can do as a society to reduce these problems of violence, racism, and poverty. Students will research the problems right here in Savannah and work within our community to help come up with solutions to make our city stronger and safer.
