In my classroom, we start the day with Morning Meeting. We greet each other, share feelings and ideas, and participate in activities that build our learning community. This works best sitting on the floor together. My students also like to sit on the floor for story time, partner work, and whole group lessons. Many students like to sit or lay on the floor as they read independently, write stories, or solve math problems. Their little bodies get tired of sitting at their desks. A comfortable, colorful rug would give us a place to build our classroom community, and provide space for cooperative and independent learning. Currently, we have only desks or tables in our classroom. We have a space to sit on the floor, but there is no rug. The floor is hard, industrial-grade, brown carpet. A rug would add a bright spot to our room that will give each student a place to sit as we learn and work together!
