Most of my students entering 5th grade are long time students of our school. Although of their life situations are less than ideal, each arrives with so much hope and expectation. Walking through the door transports them into a world of wonder, learning, growth and creativity. Reading is the center of it all. Most of the classroom decor refers to the adventures of reading purchased by me. Most books have seen better days and are donations. But there are enough that they spill out of the book cart. My reading nooks are in process. Students sit in working teams of 4-5 individuals and my moveable desk is perched in the center. Two times a week the class celebrates DEAR (dip everything and read) Time. Students take their chosen reading material and sit in personal space around the room. Most use tiny flashlights to add to the fun and heighten their experience. In the surrounding hall we exhibit our writing.
