I chose the US rug and the globe because these two pieces inherently communicate a love and an interest in building community and diversity in our classroom. Classroom environments thrive on community, and my goal is to give my students a place to come together as friends, family, and learners. We use the carpet during Morning Meetings where we learn how to treat others, we build community and relationships within our classroom, and we become a family. We use the carpet during whole class lessons where we are a tight-knit group and learning together, sharing our ideas and thoughts, and growing as learners. We also use the carpet area for brain breaks where we get to act silly and dance to get the blood flowing to our brains and rejuvenating our minds and bodies so that we can continue learning! A carpet area allows us to have a meeting spot -a HUB of sorts - where we can come back to this place to learn together! My favorite part about these two objects is that they are interactive - How cool is it that we can not only use a rug functionally - but we can also use it to learn about the country we live in! We continually are learning about different cities, states, countries, continents and cultures all over the world every single day - I want my students to experience finding those places on a map, on a globe because this creates global learners - students who are interested in learning about new places and new people that are different from ourselves. Inherently, the rug and the globe draws students back to it - it fosters an interest, a love of learning, and students who are knowledgeable about the world.
