Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them during instruction and work times. During independent work times they choose a location in the classroom that works for them. Currently my students are choosing to work sitting on carpet squares on the floor, at tables with reg. chairs or yoga balls. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating. They almost always make good choices about where they sit, are more engaged, and get more work completed than when they are just sitting at their desk. I plan to use cafe style tables and soft stools to give the kids an alternative seating to the desks in my room. These give them a more comfortable feel that they can take their laptops back to a table like a coffee shop. They can choose to just use the stools around the room where they can peer over each others shoulders and share ideas better than having desks between them. They talk, peer over shoulders, ask questions, share discoveries. Flexible seating arrangements better reflect modern, 21st-century learning styles.
