Our trip to the Kansas City Renaissance Festival will fully immerse my students in the different elements of the Renaissance era including the music, the clothing, the architecture, the food, the art, and so much more. This annual fair is one of the largest Renaissance festivals in America each year. The fair is held in a large forest-based wonderland transformed into a 16th Century European village where students can experience King Henry VIII and his royal court, jousting knights, craft shops, performance art, chain mail, and delicious feasts. We will visit the festival for an entire day exploring every feature available including live performances. For the months leading up to and after the trip, my students will study the Renaissance era in depth through independent studies, virtual field trips, and hands-on projects. By studying this content, our students will experience life outside of our small, rural town. They will learn about a part of world history less covered in the general social studies classes. In addition, they will learn about the birth of modern art, culture, and music in a way that our small town does not offer. Students can take the learning even farther by learning about architecture, clothing design, food recipes, and more. This population of students is curious about the entire world, and this nearby field trip offers my students a glimpse of that great big world!
