I am entering my second year teaching math at Union High School, and I was shocked to learn that there is no chess club here. It is my dream to start a small chess club this year that will grow into a lean, mean, chess tournament machine in a few years. Playing chess has been shown to greatly improve both reading and math standardized test scores, as well as increasing social interaction and empathy. An added benefit is that chess reaches across languages, as chess is played on a global level. In a school with over 40 languages, interaction across social groups can be a challenge. It is my hope that chess will build community, improve test scores, and lead to a lifelong love of the game. My students need 10 chess boards, 10 sets of pieces, and 10 timers to kickstart our school chess club.
