With 28 children squished on my little rugs, it’s difficult to have enough space during this crucial time. Our morning meeting is the heart and soul of our day. Some of my children come in with heavy hearts, and this feel good meeting is what they depend on. It’s where we talk about our feelings, what’s bothering us, what we need to do in order to be better friends and how we can be more successful in class. Basically, morning meeting sets the stage for our day. Each student needs to be actively and authentically engaged during this time. I want my students to feel safe so they are able to share their thoughts and feelings proudly among their peers. I want them to be relaxed and focused. Unfortunately, right now we do not have a large classroom rug. I have bought countless rugs, but they do not last, and they are too small. Half of my students argue because they don't fit on the rug, and the other half complains (rightfully) of being too squished. A large classroom rug would genuinely improve the atmosphere and mood of our classroom each day. We have an extra long school day. My kids come in at 7:30 and leave around 4:00. They are so confined to their desk and chair that they get very uncomfortable and antsy. The rug would aid in this problem as well as the small stools for my guided reading. Having a group using stools will cause them to sit up straight, breathe deeply, focus on the material and more than anything it will give them an opportunity to get out of their classroom chair and desk. They deserve these opportunities more than anything and I wish I could provide for them in this way.
