Last year, I shifted my teaching mindset to be more student-centered. I gave my students opportunities to get their hands dirty and learn by playing. This year, I wish to deepen that achievement. I believe there is power in choice. We are working in a classroom that looks the same as it did 70 years ago. Students are sitting in desks and chairs all day, and many are struggling to stay focused. Many adults do not work all day sitting down at a desk, and my students will not work that way when they leave school and enter the workforce. I want to provide them with a variety of seating choices so they have an option to choose what works best for them as an individual student. My students need a variety of seating options including a new rug, beanbag seats, comfy reading pillows, stools and portable writing/laptop stations . I can't wait to see their growth as students and individuals! My fifth grade students successfully grasped the concept of knowing where in the classroom they worked best. This year, I will continue to teach a 5th grade self contained class. There are a lot of ways for students to work flexibly around the room while doing their work in all content areas. Through research, I have seen amazing results from classrooms with open seating options for their students. I know my students would benefit as well, and I can't wait to see their excitement, as well as engagement, increase with our new seating options.
