In my experience, students get so much more out of their education when set up for success. Economic equity is one of the challenges of our student population at an urban school, and therefore by setting up all students with equal footing at the beginning of the year, success is just that much more attainable. These notebooks, though a small contribution, are necessary material for students to start building reading and writing skills. In the past I have begun the school year both with and without a 1-1 notebook ratio in my classes, and the difference is astounding. When the students feel as though they are properly equipped, and all have the same materials, it drives their desire to push themselves academically.
