Last year was my first year of teaching after 15 years in a different career. As I returned to the classroom, I found that a need for my students was to minimize transitions. A part of my focus for this year is to find methods that will allow my students to be able to focus more on their classes, and less on the details of how to manage their "things". With a class of 25 in a room that was not built for 25 students, we found ourselves in a cozy environment. To make the most of the room we had, it was important that all furniture be multi-function as well as compact and easy to use. Moving desk chairs between desks while carrying pencils and notebooks was an added challenge. With reading, writing, and math groups as large as six students, the desk chairs we were using were often difficult to bring to the group table and left us very crowded when we got there. Stools will be a far better option for us by providing more seating at our group table, giving students an additional option for independent reading or study, and allowing for much simpler storage.
