The students of our high school live in a unique situation, tucked away between major theme parks and internationally-recognized destinations. With approximately 72 million tourists visiting last year, many of these students will choose to pursue a career in hospitality because of their lifelong proximity to this industry. Whether these students choose to enter directly into the industry or enroll in a related degree program in college, my goal in launching the Tourism, Marketing, and Management Program at our high school is to provide meaningful opportunities for learning and build skills that will provide them with a competitive edge. This program prepares students for global employment in the tourism and hospitality industry by providing experiences with planning, management, finance, technical production skills, underlying principles of technology, labor issues, community issues, and health, safety, and environmental issues. Though the “blank canvas” state of this fledgling program is appealing for the limitless possibilities, the reality of limited resources is more daunting. While this program is preparing the students to be the best hospitality leaders, I need and want the students to feel like they are learning life skills as professionals. In the hospitality industry, it is customary to wear a name tag. Thus, the reason I want to create name tags for the students.
