Third grade is a pivotal grade for students because it is the introduction of Upper Elementary and testing grades. Students, teachers, and administrators spend the entire year preparing for state assessments. In my classroom, students are encouraged to utilize every moment of their day as a learning moment. When students enter my classroom, I want them to feel prepared and set up for success. I foster attitudes of grit, resiliency, confidence, and stamina in Math. By minimizing transition times going back and forth to their cubbies or searching for misplaced materials, students spend more time grappling with rigorous math activities and engaging with one another. Providing a more organized method for storage within our classroom affords us more space to engage in Math simulations and engaging activities. I allow my students to utilize a wide variety of manipulatives and tools when grappling with tasks in hopes of creating an exciting and memorable lesson. By exposing students to more strategies or methods to approach a task, students have a greater chance of success due to a larger physical and mental toolbox of resources to choose from. All of the physical materials must be stored, and our space is extremely limited. The mission at our school is to produce productive and respectful students. Having a space to properly and neatly store all of their materials also teaches students responsibility, organization, and ownership, as well as school pride. I often emphasize the importance of taking care of our space and using materials gently. These are all transferable life lessons that students will use far beyond the Third Grade and well into their professional careers.
