To help my students learn amid the pandemic, I could use activities that assist them in developing retelling and sequencing skills. As a full time piece of the specials rotation at our Pre-K - 5th elementary school teaching a class focusing on reading and language development, I have noticed many students are missing the basic skills needed to be able to retell a story or sequence events within a story. Both of these are basic life skills that students need as they progress through life, but are severely lacking due to a lack of interaction with adults during distance learning amid the pandemic. Now that we are back in the classroom full time, I hope to restore and improve on these skills. To make this topic more engaging, my students would love opportunities to develop retelling and sequencing skills through play. Props to accompany books will help students retell stories with each other without it being a boring paper and pencil activity or one they simply have to do orally. The retelling props will also serve as aids in helping the students remember the parts of a story that they can then accompany with more detail. The sequencing activities will provide students with hands-on, visual ways to think through and place events in a chronological order. To bring my dream learning activity to life, I’d love to get hands-on activities to help students be actively engaged as they develop retelling and sequencing skills. Since I teach one class each Pre-K through 5th grade daily, it is important I acquire materials on a variety of levels and interests so I can accommodate all learners where they are and help them grow.
