I am a special education and ESL teacher at a Chicago neighborhood high school that serves primarily students from low-income families. Our student body is extremely diverse, and represents a wide variety of races, religions, nationalities, languages, and socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. Many enter high school with interrupted schooling due to transience, homelessness, and lack of access to education in their home countries. Most, especially our students with unique learning needs, have literacy and math skills that are significantly below grade level. My students need extra support, interventions, and technology/instructional resources to help them access grade-level curriculum and achieve academic success in high school and beyond.
