Learning using video and screens is not developmentally appropriate for young children and presents obstacles for my students. In order to be an effective teacher and model for my students and their families, I need to provide them with basic materials so that we can engage in learning activities together during our virtual sessions. Providing young children with learning materials that are hands-on is the key to keeping them engaged while they learn! Being able to create individual learning kits with items such as play dough, rollers, and dough scissors is one way to elicit fun as we do virtual learning activities together. Other essential items include lacing beads, puzzles, sorting materials, pegboards and other hands on materials that will help keep them engaged in various activities that reinforce basic concept skills. Basic concept skills are critical to build the foundational skills for future development in all areas of learning. Concepts such as vocabulary, sorting, sequencing, manipulation skills & counting are just a few basic skill areas that young children need to develop. By providing basic materials, I can model and coach caregivers while engaging with their child virtually to enhance the development of early learning foundation skills to help better prepare them for future.
