Literature is a refuge, but also a mirror and window. The books I have chosen are specifically by Black and Latinx authors, and not only expose my Caucasian students to some of the unique struggles of their peers but also allows my students of color to see themselves represented in literature. The books are high-interest and engaging, both of which are important traits in keeping upper high school students focused. As Advanced Placement Literature is often a course that is restricted to "classic" novels, these novels are contemporary but also provide the "literary merit" that is a standard of the AP curriculum. I have a classroom library tailored to my other courses, but this project is exclusively for my AP classroom, where diversity in literature is frequently minimal or nonexistent. Bless Me, Ultima provides the voice of an authentic Chicano author, and Sing, Unburied, Sing is a contemporary book written by an African-American woman. Both novels provide unique perspectives with complexities that are consistent with my course.
