Funding for public education is sorely lacking in this country. Tax money is allocated for military spending but not for schools. I am passionate about books and equally passionate about children reading. When children read, they make connections. Making connections creates validation and self-worth. Children are affireded the opportunity to see others like them. They have the potential to understand themselves and the world around them better. My school librarian does the best with what she has but what she has is not adequate. I personally spend hundreds of my own money every year buying used books for my classroom and for my students. I donate books to our Book Swap, a nice program that allows students to take books home, any book they choose, with no return date and no questions asked if they keep the book.
