We were able to use funds to provide classroom libraries for Kindergarten through fifth grade. We organized our libraries so that all students had access to different genres and they were able to self-select books based on their interest. We talked about books in the classroom constantly and modeled the excitement of reading. As a result of all of our efforts, we have developed a love and passion for books. After three years of work, we have moved out of priority status and are fully accredited! We are the first school in our school division and one of few in the state to make this transition. However, the physical appearance of the school building and the ability to support collaborative work among students doesn’t match the learning environment we need for students to support and extend their love of reading. They would benefit from having the Flex 3 Tiered seating, a space to gather and read with each other for book clubs, reading extension activities, literature circles, and to trade books. Students need the space and opportunity to discuss what they have discovered or learned through their reading, as well as a space to share the stories that have touched or inspired them.
