In today's test-driven world, it's even more important to create a classroom environment that will nurture imagination and empathy. Inquiry-based learning, play, and providing opportunities for children to make choices, are wonderful ways to promote both imagination and empathy in our children today. "The bottom line is when children are at play, they're not just playing--they're learning machines, and play is the engine that drives them." I'm so excited to read Renee Dinnerstein's book, "Choice Time: How to Deepen Learning Through Inquiry and Play" and implement her fabulous dramatic play ideas in my kindergarten classroom. We are lucky enough to already have a play kitchen in our classroom, but with the addition of a table and chairs (that are perfectly designed for little people), my kindergartners will finally have an amazing dramatic play area. This play-based center will promote a culture of inquiry, and provide opportunities for my students to be explorative and creative in their thinking. I can't wait to see my sweet students actively engaged in their brand new kitchen area!!!
