Who says Math can't be fun? I have seen older children in tears when it's time to work out a 2-step story problem because they don't understand how the number system works and lack early numeracy skills. A good math foundation is based on number sense. Sequencing numbers, adding, subtracting, recognizing patterns and problem solving-all these concepts stem from early numeracy skills. These math activities that I am requesting will be used to build math skills and confidence, all while having fun. These math activities will also help my students relate and connect to the real world. They will be developing some very necessary skills that will come in handy as they get older. A child that has the ability to count on from a number, count backwards, skip count and compute, has a powerful mind. With these activities my students will be able to discover number combinations, and build a sense of fact fluency. These math activities will provide my first-graders with such an opportunity.
