Like snowflakes we are all unique and different. Our students learning process is too unique. Students learn in many different ways: visual, auditory, tactile, kinesthetic, and social. Help us launch our first project based learning unit of the year as my 6th grade scholars leverage the use of optical illusions to inform community members about the many ways we can reduce trash and waste that is produced in our school? Students will be able to have fully immersed experience if we are able to obtain all of the items on our supply list. We will be learning about marine life in the Chesapeake Bay and constructing a customized optical illusion. Students will learn how to use their voice and actions to become stewards and leaders in their community. The MacBook Pro will provide a hands-on experience empowering students who are tactile or kinesthetic learners, those who need movement to be involved in order to learn best, to actively engage and produce tangible evidence of their learning experience. However, the requested materials also engage students who are auditory learners that like to talk about what they're doing, as well as visual learners that want the opportunity to see what everyone else is creating. For social learners, the time spent in small group conversations will strengthen their content knowledge, communication skills, and confidence. Throughout the 12 week unit students will be researching how school community trash issues directly effect the Chesapeake Bay, Local Endangered species, and the overall health of the community. Hands-on experiences also allow students to experiment with trial and error, learn from their mistakes, and understand the potential gaps between theory and practice. As a bonus, hands-on experiences also provide educators with a unique opportunity to enrich the minds of their students.
