My first graders are active, curious learners who attend a Texas public charter school that serves low-income, at-risk students. The school uses a variety of methods to help prepare students for college and lifelong learning. Students are taught that learning is not only important but fun. The school district works hard to develop social skills, such as making good choices, working hard, and being nice, by building a school culture based on the values of honor, excellence, and commitment. Students are taught to be trustworthy and have integrity and that promises made are sacred. Teachers truly believe that all children will learn as long as teachers care enough to never give up, learn from their mistakes, and encourage students to do the same. Teachers, parents, and students sign a commitment to excellence as a vital part of the student's learning and parents and students are allowed and encouraged to call their teachers after hours to ask questions or get help with homework.
