To give students flexibility and choice within the classroom I am planning to implement flexible seating in my classroom this coming school year. Some supplies that students will be able to choose from include bean bag chairs, pillows, sofas, and yoga balls. Students will choose the type of seating in which they feel most comfortable learning in. Flexible seating allows students to do what they are unable to do in traditional desks; Move! They will be able to wobble, rock, bounce, lean, or even stand. Studies suggest that students who are active in the classroom have more on-task behavior. With STEM and technology projects being something that is implemented regularly in the classroom, there is a great need for a physical space that supports room for community building and collaboration. As much as I tried different types of desk arrangements, traditional desks just weren't cutting it for the classroom collaboration that I was looking for. With flexible seating, we will be able to have the flexibility to move seating options in the classroom to create spaces designed for conversations, and collaboration! I can't wait to start this project! I am beyond excited to see how flexible seating will change the dynamics of my classroom to create an environment that is relaxed, engaged, and active!
