The students in my middle school classes pretty much perfectly represent the city of Chicago: all of the city's racial and ethnic groups are represented by their smiling faces. Our school is a vibrant place of learning because of the backgrounds, talents, and curiosity they bring with them, but our school is a cash-strapped public school with no money for discretionary spending. I don't consider interesting books for literature circles non-essential items, but I can't offer my students these kinds of choices without help from outside the school.
