The Chromebook computers will be used by my students to improve their reading comprehension skills. I plan to incorporate additional reading strategies across their science and math curriculum because research shows students who read with comprehension and read with confidence become confident readers who are high achievers. I have digital access to National Geographic and plan to blend the technology and articles in a reading corner as a strategy for differentiating my lessons. Many of the National Geographic articles parallel the science curriculum. I project National Geographic articles on an LED board in class. Students read at their individual pace, and when they come across a word they do not recognize, we stop, select the megaphone and learn how to pronounce the word. Next, we look up the definition of the word and select the appropriate meaning. We practice this exercise this activity together a few times and within a few days, my students are outside the door asking, “What are we reading today?” This strategy can be used thought their academic careers and job careers. Research shows that students with extensive vocabulary read with greater fluency and comprehension.
