I am teaching in a title 1 school where most of my students will be students of color. By including a rich selection of books, we will learn about who we are and about others' cultures. I want students to feel welcome and for them to know they could be themselves in our classroom. I want students to know they are valued and important. I will be doing this through these amazing books that will spark rich conversations and have us talking about how we could be helpers and compassionate beings. First graders also need text with illustrations that are worth a million words, as we will be having rich conversations about what we are reading. We will be applying what we are learning to ensure students are practicing how to be compassionate :). With your support, my students will not only grow their minds but also their hearts.
