This past year every student at our school was loaned a kindle for independent reading. Through donated funds, we were able to load those kindles with an ever-growing shared library of high-interest books. Within a day of requesting a new book, we've been able to purchase it and send it directly to a student's Kindle. Next year's students will start with a library already three times as large as last fall's--over three hundred books hand selected by their peers. Kindles have helped our students read TWICE as much as they did the previous year: 60 million words! But middle school is TOUGH on kindles. This project will equip our readers with sturdier kindles that support a wider range of books. These Kindle fires will allow us to add graphic novels into our digital library. The tough screen interface will enable students to more readily look up unknown words. And the silicone covers will ensure their portable libraries survive the daily clunks and crashes of a middle school backpack.
