The Calm Down Boxes consist of a number of tools that every students can easily access in the classrooms to use when they experience strong emotions and learning becomes difficult until they can calm themselves down. I have requested several different types of calming and sensory tools. These include things to squish, crayons and paper to draw their emotions, and fidget toys that relieve stress and increase focus. The fidgets will keep their hands busy and their bodies calm. The sand timers will allow the students to be mindful of their time with the calm down box. Having this variety will allow the students to experiment with what works for each of them. Our students need a variety of tools to help learn strategies for calming down. For some, the classic stress ball or taking a deep breath works great! But many students need different types of sensory input or output to regulate their body and emotions. I have seen how choice can positively affect my students work and demeanor and hope that the additional options will help us grow even more!
