With The Chronicles of Narnia, Percy Jackson, and The One and Only series now on our shelves, reading time has become one of the most anticipated parts of our day. These stories have opened new doors for my students—not just into magical worlds and heroic quests, but into lessons about courage, friendship, empathy, and imagination. Through these texts, we've been working on essential reading skills like identifying themes, analyzing character development, and drawing connections between the fantasy worlds of the books and our own real-world experiences. Students are learning how authors use symbolism and point of view to convey deeper meaning, and they're practicing how to support their opinions with evidence from the text—a skill that builds both literacy and confidence.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is no longer a quiet, solitary task; it's a shared adventure. We hold small-group discussions where students debate whether Edmund from Narnia is truly a villain or just misunderstood, or whether Percy's flaws make him a more relatable hero. During read-alouds, I often pause and ask students to predict what will happen next or to visualize the settings—sometimes they even sketch scenes from the books to capture their mental images. Many of my reluctant readers have discovered that reading can be fun when the stories speak to their imaginations. For example, one student who used to avoid chapter books now rushes to our reading corner to grab The One and Only Ivan, eager to share his thoughts about Ivan's kindness and courage with his classmates.\r\n\r\nThese books have also created an inclusive community of readers. Some of my students identify deeply with Percy's feelings of not fitting in, while others connect with the quiet strength of characters like Stella from The One and Only Ruby. They're realizing that heroes come in many forms—and that their own voices matter, too. Watching them swap books, recommend favorite scenes, and even write their own \"next adventures\" has been one of the greatest joys of this project.\r\n\r\nBecause of you, my students aren't just learning to read—they're learning to love reading. Thank you for helping them see themselves in stories, explore new worlds, and discover the power of words to inspire and connect us all.","fullyFundedDate":1757697902751,"projectUrl":"project/fun-reading-to-entertain/9683535/","projectTitle":"Fun Reading to Entertain","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Eddins","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7813650"},{"teacherId":7813650,"projectId":9674489,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generosity, my fifth graders are discovering the joy of reading through our new books! The new books have helped me introduce important literacy skills such as identifying theme, analyzing character development, and making connections between the text and students' own lives. We've also focused on reading comprehension strategies like predicting, questioning, and summarizing — all while exploring stories that reflect diverse voices and experiences. These engaging texts have made it easier for students to practice deeper thinking and discussion in a way that feels natural and fun.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is now a lively, collaborative experience. Students spread out across the room during independent reading time, some curled up on the rug while others sit together in small groups to share favorite parts or talk through tricky passages. We hold \"book chats\" where students lead conversations about what they've read, and I love seeing how their confidence has grown as they share insights and recommendations with their classmates.\r\n\r\nSeveral students have especially connected with the new books. One student who rarely participated before has fallen in love with a new fantasy series and now volunteers to read aloud almost every day. Another student who was hesitant about reading has discovered a love for graphic novels and proudly finishes each one cover to cover. Your kindness has made a lasting difference, not only in their academic journeys but also in their confidence, motivation, and sense of belonging.\r\n\r\nFor many families, the start of a school year brings excitement but also a heavy burden. The cost of backpacks, notebooks, pencils, and other essentials can be overwhelming when combined with everyday living expenses. Too often, children from less fortunate backgrounds arrive at school without the materials they need to fully participate. This lack of supplies can create barriers that affect their ability to learn, complete assignments, and feel equal to their peers. Thanks to your support, these barriers are being removed. Students now walk into their classrooms equipped and ready to succeed.\r\n\r\nThe impact of your gift goes beyond the physical supplies themselves. A new set of pencils or a sturdy backpack may seem like small things, but in a child's eyes, they symbolize hope and opportunity. They provide a sense of dignity and confidence that every student deserves. When children have the tools they need, they no longer feel singled out or left behind. Instead, they feel empowered to raise their hands in class, engage with lessons, and take pride in their work.\r\n\r\nTeachers have also expressed their deep appreciation. Too often, educators use their own limited resources to make up for what students lack. Your generosity lightens that burden, allowing teachers to focus on what they do best—nurturing, teaching, and inspiring. With classrooms now equipped with the necessary supplies, teachers can create an environment where every child has an equal chance to thrive.\r\n\r\nThe ripple effect of your kindness reaches far into the community. Families who may have been struggling to choose between paying bills and buying school materials now feel a sense of relief and gratitude. They know their children are supported not only by their schools but also by caring individuals like you. This creates a stronger, more connected community where generosity and compassion set the foundation for growth.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, your contribution plants seeds of possibility in the hearts of children. With the proper supplies, students can dream bigger, set higher goals, and believe that their education truly matters. Every notebook filled with ideas, every drawing in a sketchbook, every essay written with a pen you provided is a testament to the difference you have made. These small daily moments will shape their futures, giving them the confidence to pursue opportunities they may never have imagined.\r\n\r\nWe cannot thank you enough for your thoughtfulness and generosity. Your support is more than a donation—it is an investment in the potential of young lives. You have shown our students that they are seen, valued, and worthy of success. That gift is priceless, and its impact will continue to grow for years to come.","fullyFundedDate":1629200787431,"projectUrl":"project/science-and-social-studies-needs/5623506/","projectTitle":"Science and Social Studies Needs","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Eddins","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7813650"},{"teacherId":9462432,"projectId":9173414,"letterContent":"I cannot express enough how much receiving our supplies for math and music has benefited our classroom full of 24 three and four year olds.
