This past year I have gone full flexible seating in my class. (Picture yoga mats, bean bags, pillows, cushions, standing tables, coffee tables, end tables, all being utilized by kiddos who are on task and working hard to achieve their goals.) I was the first teacher in my grade level to get rid of all of my desks and chairs and bring in different options for my students to use throughout the day. I have done a lot of research and have visited multiple classrooms where flexible seating is being used, but nothing was more convincing than seeing it in action in my own room with my own students. It was so natural for the kids, they focused more intensively and for longer periods of time. My students are free to choose a new spot to sit, stand, lay, etc. every time that we do a new activity. By doing this, students are not required to sit in one spot in upright, and I'll say it uncomfortable, chairs for hours at a time. Not only have I seen an increase in the focus of my students, but I have also seen a decrease in behavior problems. A big part of flexible seating is teaching self awareness. This is not only an important skill for school aged children, but this skill will help them in college, their careers, and lives in general.
