The Catan games allows students to apply the concepts and key ideas learned in class in a real-world scenario. Engaging in a competitive and concrete experience with the concept of an economy is highly motivating for learners and will give my students the opportunity to be able to think more deeply as well as to solidify their understanding of economic ideas and skills. Real-world life skills! I enjoy using this game as a way to introduce supply and demand as well as to reinforce concepts such as scarcity, factors of production and opportunity cost The game will definitely cause frustration for some students, and joy for others….much like how our economy works today. The game allows students to receive immediate feedback on the choices they are making so they can quickly modify, refine and deepen their understanding of these key economic principles. Throughout the year students will have multiple opportunities to play the game. I also teach multiple sections of the course, thus impacting a large number of students. This game provides a rich learning experience where students make decisions, practice negotiating, and get a taste of why alliances are built and change over time. After each iteration, we will debrief students learning experiences. When students play again they can refine their strategies and test their theories. Will students build alliances or instigate rivals? Will they trade freely or choose isolation? Will they diversify their resources or form a monopoly to force trade? How much does luck play into their success and what would the role of the dice represent in real civilizations?
