The books I've selected for this project serve to accomplish two objectives. The first of these is to provide my diverse students with literature and characters that they can connect to. Background knowledge is the basis of reading, and representation matters! Additionally, graphic novels attract and maintain interest, while teaching new language learners incredibly important concepts like figurative language, punctuation/emphasis, and unfamiliar cultural norms. Pairing vocabulary with pictures is a key ELL strategy and graphic novels suit that need impeccably!
The single best way to increase reading ability and comprehension is to read more. In adding these books to my already-existing high-interest collection of classroom library books, I hope to provide my students with an extensive range of literature and reading materials that not only encourage them to read, but also encourage them to ENJOY reading. My classroom library is a comfortable place with pillows, colorful decorations, and tons of stories - but that doesn't matter if my students cannot connect to the materials on the shelves.
