I have been receiving book donations and building my classroom library for just under 5 years. As I was cleaning and boxing up materials to be stored away while I prepared to teach from home, I decided to organize my library to bring picture books home to read online. It was then that I realized that I had really great books full of inspirational messages, but none of these books represented what any of my students look like. It is so important that students see themselves represented in the books that are in their classroom. A student spends around 6.5 hours at school, 5 days a week. This should be a place where they feel welcome and celebrated. I love to use picture books to teach lessons about growth mindset and acceptance- How great would it be to see a character representative of themselves overcoming big challenges? Or for these young minds to learn at a young age about other cultures they have not been exposed to. This is where learning about acceptance begins.
