My students come to the classroom with different backgrounds, sets of experiences, cultural contexts and learned views. It is important for my students to be exposed to and accept everyone and celebrate their culture. In my classroom we celebrate EVERY student and learn about their culture! Grand Rapids Public Schools serves families from 55 countries around the world and 54 different languages! The students will be able to use puppets of different ethnicity to help show them that it is okay to be different. This will allow children to respect others who are different, they will begin to appreciate individuality. The multicultural clothing set will help the students explore how people around the world dress and understand that not everyone dresses the same. The multicultural book set and children around the world books will be used to assist children with recognizing differences, as well as similarities, among all people. Allowing children to explore varying cultures creates opportunities for them to see that even when people have different customs and traditions, they often share some common traits, too. It is crucial for my students to accept and learn about each other so we are able to have the best, diverse learning experiences!
